Mega Ship Dining – Giovanni’s Specialty Restaurant

Oasis of the Seas Giovanni's

The Oasis of the Seas features several complimentary dining options, but the specialty restaurants take dining on board a cruise ship to a whole different level.  Most cruise ships are geared toward the masses and fine dining has gone a bit by the wayside, but the specialty restaurants help keep that lavish fine dining feel alive on the seas.  Giovanni’s is the first level of fine dining on this mega cruise ship.

Giovanni’s is available for lunch or dinner for a nominal fee.  It is definitely one of the more reasonable specialty restaurants and is worth the extra per person fee.  The general concept is family style Italian cuisine.

The service staff encourages you to order each course and share with the table.  If you are a party of two, order a few appetizers for one and one of the larger appetizers, meant for two to share.  Even though Pasta is separated as its own course, you are encouraged to order an entrée and share one or two of the pasta courses as a side dish.  This gives several people the opportunity to taste several dishes rather than ordering just one for yourself.  Of course if you would like your own pasta course, that is perfectly fine too.

The lunch menu does not vary much from the dinner menu, thus making the lower cost per person a good option.  Here are just a few of the food options – Appetizers: Antipasti per Due – a variety of cured meats, cheeses, olives and vegetables for two; Melanzane Alla Parmigiana – Baked Eggplant Parmigiana; Carpaccio Di Manzo – Sliced seared beef tenderloin, shaved fennel and lettuces with an herb oil drizzle; and Chippino con Pesce Misto – Fennel scented Seafood-tomato stew. Pastas: Gnocchi di Patate – Potato Gnocchi tossed in light bleu cheese sauce or thyme-scented baby lamb and root vegetable sauce; Risotto ai Fungi Trifolati – Traditional risotto and forest mushrooms finished with Porcini and truffle mushroom tapenade; or Ravioli di Polpa di Granchio – Maryland crab ravioli with sweet corn and crab meat sauce.  Entrees: Everything from Grilled Lamb Chops; 8 oz Filet with Barolo reduction; Chicken breast filled with ricotta and mushroom, wrapped in prosciutto and served with Chardonnay-sage sauce; baked Jumbo Shrimp, to Veal Ossobuco au jus served with cheese polenta.  Dessert includes home made Cannoli’s, Tiramisu to die for, Chocolate Torte among others.

Overall, we enjoyed our leisurely dinner here.  The staff was attentive and the restaurant was quite busy.  We were made to feel as if we should try everything on the menu – and believe me – we rolled ourselves out of there!  When my husband and I ordered our own desserts, our waiter brought us Tiramisu to share in addition to our order, because as he stated – “It’s too good not to share”.

Dinner is $20 per person and Lunch is $15 per person.  It is best to make a reservation for a time to dine, but you can walk in if space allows.
